Omidia's host, Fuitadnet, recently started having beyond serious issues managing database information; thus, Omidia's forum (which was essentially all there was to the main site) died. The strange coincidence is that it died when physically about the same time that it died spiritually, so to speak.

Even stranger was the I recently became convinced that Omidia could and should, if it stands for something at all, stand for something larger. Omidia has for some time now been the hang out for "VGMusic.com people with brains," and I think that this has been one of the many self-limiting features of Omidia.

Firstly, I think that there could be some benefit of combining Omidia and VGMusic's forum/file database ideas, but that would take a great amount of dedication and support by both community members and the responsible coders for the site. Is that possible? Sure. Will it take some searching? Absolutely. Might it require money? Quite possibly.

Secondly, MIDI has been for the last 20 years a very revolutionary aspect of digital music. Improvements to MIDI are being overshadowed by A) an increase in popularity of recorded/digitally sampled music and B) no room for growth in the most currently released operating systems. For this reason, MIDI will soon be an even stranger and more difficult hobby to maintain. People will need a place to come for ideas and support: information on how to write MIDIs- better, more efficient MIDIs! Those with a "thing" for keyboards or those with a "thing" for sequencing itself- there should be room for anyone interested in MIDI at Omidia, and this sentiment was quite missing before.

I don't mind emailing professors and students about Omidia as long as the site is something worth coming to, eh? There is no doubt in my mind that there are people who realize the importance of MIDI in music and would be dying to participate in a community like the one I described *if they knew that it existed*.

Shall we bring such a thing into existence?

I say yay and we expand to bigger seas. Fuck VGMusic, that place had become increasingly stupid in the past months, and it being a hang of that site will only serve to hurt this place.

I think an expansion is overdue, but I don't think that we should hold VGMusic in such a negative light. Had VGMusic not been as "stupid" as it has over the years, Omidia would have never existed in the first place -- more importantly, this opportunity to expand and grow would have never happened! Smile I think that it's not a terribly wrong idea to build an alliance with VGMusic. If they were willing to partner with Omidia, I think there could be some benefits there. Yet, we need to focus on bringing "MIDI people" together. If VGMusic wants to get involved in that too, I say great. More power to them!

This is hot man, but sheet. I voted Nyay! cause it sounded cool/cute, but I think this might just be what is needed. If you can get some contributors, then eah. Also, there's the proposed HD-MIDI format that may come to fruition in the not too distant future, so I think MIDI still has a good life to lead ahead of this. So live on, OMIDIA!

HD-MIDI? Care to elaborate on that? Sounds interesting, or was it just sarcasm I didn't get? :\

I've heard about this before. The way I heard it, it's supposed to be some sort of MIDI update that would "provide greater resolution in data values, increase the number of MIDI channels, and support the creation of entirely new kinds of MIDI messages," or so the story goes... There's also supposed to be some sort of speed issue that's being resolved as well. "HD-MIDI" is sort of a code name for the entire project.

However, I have seen no dates as to this project's completion so far, so who knows when and if it'll get done any time soon. Neutral

I rather wait till the official MIDI commission sets out the specs first then jump into the deep end just yet about what it can do.

I hardly think there's really much of an option until they do finally release some specs as well some estimated project completion dates.

I do agree though. I won't be jumping on this bandwagon until at which point this particular MMA-based project has some concrete results, preferrably near completion (if it even happens...). Until then, I've logged it mentally as more of a "mild" subject of interest. I'll admit that it raises an eyebrow or two, but that's about it.
